The only places you have to hide are the closets, high objects, and random assort of dark spaces inside the room, all the while a mix of haunting noises are messing with your mind. The feeling you get can only be described as a grim terror as most encounters send you into a scared frenzy toward any place "safe" to hide.
The setting, like previously stated, takes place in an 18th century castle, which the basement of which you end up in after being knocked unconscious. You aren't given any information on where you are other than a small set of clues to guide you and you "don't remember" anything due to the obvious fact [from the title] that you have amnesia. And you soon figure out there are many gruesome things to behold in the other rooms of this level. As you make your way through the game things become much more clearer but the danger increases dramatically, as roving monsters in the different parts of the castle are on the hunt for you and all you can do is hide.
The maker of Amnesia: The Dark Descent has also released plans on making a sequel, Amnesia, The Machine for Pigs. A brief outline of the game hints that you are a wealthy industrialist who blacked out when he caught a strange disease, and you wake up months later to find that there is something strange going on...
